What you plant in your heart is what you produce with your life. For fulfillment in your work and relationships, put your focus on what you want more of. True growth is a practice and process of cultivating relationships, building connections and strengthening community.
I call this process Growth Farming. So do other practitioners of true success like Seth Godin, Benji Rogers, Derek Webb, Steve Palfreyman, Bird Thomas and others. See the DIY Artist Route Podcast for their individual lessons and perspectives.
It’s important that we as creators, musicians, entrepreneurs, and self-starters value individuals instead of mass markets.
Individual’s value is key to our short-term and long term success.
How does the growth farming principle work?
Marketers want to show us how to grow a massive following, build empires of fans & not pay attention to who these people are. When we focus on a nameless & faceless mass we can’t build anything that truly lasts.
Growth farming is a combination of personal development and community building. It is about operating your life out of a place of peace and love so that your output draws the right people in to connect with you. This kind of harmony changes the world, and creates new channels of success in every area of your life.
I don’t profess to know everything about marketing, or audience growth. However, I have learned that connecting with the right people is far more rewarding that trying to reach the masses. The whole “syndicated radio host” came about by building 1-1 connections directly with radio station managers. Many of whom I didn’t know or have a previous connection with.
Old-fashioned communication, followup, and relationship building is how I built my successful platforms. Wrap these principles into one term and call it Growth Farming.
I started in a small town, and I understand what it’s like to feel like being a little fish in a big pond. Most artists and entrepreneurs feel that way too.
